Web startups are not quite a piece of cake for young entrepreneurs
by Corina Ciubotaru

For people nowadays, it's becoming increasingly easy to found companies based on the Internet but what brings most of them to bankruptcy is the sheer amount of work it takes to get things going. All startup companies have difficulties in the beginning, setting up contacts, becoming well-known on the market and getting customers, so some of them don't stay alive for very long. Those that do, take a lot of work, especially if they don't receive any venture capital; this is the case with 8coupons.com, an Internet start-up that consists of only two people: Landy Ung and Wan Hsi Yuan, a couple that lose a lot of sleep to make their mobile coupon business a hit. They have little chance of getting venture capital and have invested $30,000 in the business they run from the studio they live in and their laptops. They now have 150 advertisers and 1,700 users who pick a coupon from the website and it gets sent to their phone, ready to be used in a partner store. Quite a different story is that of David Karp, a 21-year old who has already started numerous websites, all of which becoming successful, including urbanbaby.com, Tumblr and worldwidefido.com. Some were sold, others still remain under his umbrella and he manages to take care of things and start new ones with a striking entrepreneurial spirit. This spirit is of utmost importance in a business attempt like this and if it comes together with hard work and ambition, surprises like Microsoft's purchase of 1.6% of Facebook may arise for young entrepreneurs.
